What Is The Difference Between Maiko and Geiko? Check Out What Makes Kyoto Marvelous!

Geisha is known as the woman that represents Kyoto.

But do you know they are distinguished between Maiko and Geiko?

The person on the top is Maiko of 「Shigemori」 at Miyagawa-cho and the on the bottom is Geiko. Maiko is in her novitiate. Maiko become Geiko when she became fully qualified.

They seem similar but they each have distinctive features.

Maiko during novitiate dress her hair by themselves but Geiko wear wigs. Besides this, there are great differences between things like makeup, hair ornaments, shoes and obis (sash).

You would find that the girl wearing a gorgeous hair ornament is still in training when you walk around Kyoto by knowing this.
